Designing plastic materials that satisfy both these con icting requirements is technically challenging. No plastic available today provides a cost-effective and reliable means of addressing this problem. An understanding of breakdown mechanisms and technologies that allow a faster degradation of plastics waste at sea are therefore of particular interest.
