This chapter explores the details of SNMP-based network management and the Internet Network Management Framework. It discusses the structure of management information (SMI), which defines the rules for identifying managed objects; the management information bases (MIBs), which describe the managed objects themselves; plus SNMP versions 1,2, and 3, which define the mechanism by which managers and agents communicate. For clarity, we will use the term SNMP to refer to S N M P Version 1, the term SNMPv2 to refer to SNMP Version 2, and SNMPv3 to refer to SNMP Version 3. Three versions of this work have been produced, all of which build upon, revise, and/or enhance the efforts of the previous development. In other words, SNMPv3 is based upon SNMPv2, which in turn is based upon SNMPvl . However, if we just jumped immediately into a study of SNMPv3, we would miss some of the development progressions from one version to the next, and would find ourselves in an area of technology that becomes quite complex very quickly. For this reason, we are going to take our investigation one step at a time beginning with SNMPv1, describing the changes between versions as we proceed. Therefore, Sections 12.1 through 12.4 will consider the SMI, MIBs, and protocol structures associated with SNMPvl; Section 12.5 will consider SNMPv2; and Section 12.6 will study SNMPv3. Since SNMPvl provides the foundation, we will spend the majority of our detailed discussion with that version. SNMPv1 is also the most prevalent implementation. As we will explore, the complexities associated with SNMPv2 did not receive widespread acceptance, and current deployments are just now catching up with SNMPv3, which leaves SNMPvl as the network management protocol of choice (or default, depending upon your perspective) within many enterprises.

Java wrapper classes usually do not use JDBC classes to perform a database connection and send/retrieve data to and from the database. On the contrary, they often use native methods and libraries that are, by definition, not portable. They also offer a higher level of abstraction by mapping rows of data to Java objects data members, providing a solution to the impedance mismatch between SQL and Java. Using JDBC with an ODBMS While JDBC and JDBC drivers must support at least ANSI SQL-92 Entry Level, there are no limitations on the kind of statements that may be submitted to the Database Management System. An application query may be a specialized derivative of SQL. Many Object Database Management Systems (ODBMS) vendors have endorsed the JDBC specification. They will probably provide higher-level APIs to map directly stored objects to Java classes. The goal is to offer a persistent service for Java classes, without worrying about specific DBMS-API access issues that make programming more difficult and less efficient from a developer s point of view. Object databases are particularly well suited to store multimedia information. Among other kinds of data, they offer enhanced facilities to handle, store, retrieve, and query HTML documents, images, free text, video, audio, multidimensional graphics, and even Java objects. All these multimedia objects, if considered as persistent data members of an object-oriented programming language such as C++, Smalltalk, or Java, may then be manipulated very easily within such languages.

Throughout this book you ll find descriptions of the configuration files you need to set up the different features that make up Linux systems. The two major locations of configuration files are your home directory (where your personal configuration files are kept) and the /etc directory (which holds system-wide configuration files). Following are descriptions of directories (and subdirectories) that contain useful configuration files. (Refer to Table 4-1 for some individual configuration files in /etc that are of particular interest.) Viewing the contents of Linux configuration files can teach you a lot about administering Linux systems.

Above the physical-structure layer of the database is the data layer, which can be veri ed by the following DBCC commands: DBCC CHECKCATALOG ( database ): Checks the integrity of the system tables within a database, ensuring referential integrity among tables, views, columns, and data types. While it will report any errors, under normal conditions no detailed report is returned. This is also run as a part of DBCC CHECKDB. DBCC CHECKCONSTRAINTS ( table , constraint ): Examines the integrity of a speci c constraint, or all the constraints, for a table. It essentially generates and executes a query to verify each constraint, and reports any errors found. As with DBCC CHECKCATALOG, if no issues are detected, then nothing is reported. DBCC CHECKIDENT ( table ): Veri es the consistency of the current identity-column value and the identity column for a speci c table. If a problem exists, then the next value for the identity column is updated to correct any error. If the identity column is broken, then the new identity value will violate a primary key or unique constraint, and new rows cannot be added to the table. This command can also be used to reseed the current identity value by using the RESEED option and a new_reseed_value. The following code demonstrates the use of the DBCC CHECKIDENT command. When needed, this command resets the current identity value of the Employee table in the AdventureWorks2008 sample database:

We discuss calculated fields later in this chapter. You can find an in-depth explanation of operators in 11.
